UK accuses groups linked to China of two ‘malicious cyber campaigns’<\/p>\n

There are several key standout phrases in the response \nby China\u2019s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian earlier, who avoided mentioning the United Kingdom by name in his statement on cyber incidents.<\/p>\n
He said countries should have \u201csufficient, objective \nevidence\u201d before making what he described as \u201cbaseless accusations\u201d.<\/p>\n
He also added that it was \u201ccrucial\u201d that \u201ccountries did not \npoliticise these issues.\u201d<\/p>\n
This latest spat comes just a few months after it looked \nlike the relationship between Beijing and London was in the process of being \nrepaired.<\/p>\n
The UK had in the past voiced concerns about threats to civil \nliberties in the former British colony of Hong Kong and Beijing\u2019s failure to \ncondemn Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine and of course previous alleged incidents \nof cyber espionage.<\/p>\n
A visit by former Foreign Secretary James Cleverly last \nAugust, the first visit to Beijing by a UK foreign minister in five years, \nseemed to ease some of the tension. <\/p>\n
China also welcomed the return of \nDavid Cameron. The new foreign secretary once called for a \u201cgolden era\u201d with \nChina and state media headlines pondered if the two countries were set for a \n\u201cnew era of co-operation\u201d.<\/p>\n
But the prospect of fresh sanctions by the UK government \nwill likely prompt Beijing to retaliate in some form \u2013 putting the potential \nfor a \u201cnew era\u201d in doubt.<\/p>\n
