Ultimately, I have come away thinking that while it was fun to try this device out, it doesn\u2019t yet do anything I can\u2019t do already, either with my phone or my own eyes, and often more slowly.<\/p>\n
Others agree: it has been called “half-baked” and a device that “fails at almost everything” by reviewers.<\/p>\n
And I promised to tell you what Marques Brownlee had to say about the R1: \u201cbarely reviewable\u201d was the title of his video about it.<\/p>\n
The firm itself admits it is a work in progress.<\/p>\n
\u201cBeing an early start-up, it\u2019s never about winning or losing – it\u2019s all about survival,” said Rabbit founder Jesse Lyu.<\/p>\n
“In some ways, I\u2019m happy we\u2019re getting the pushback and doubts now because it\u2019s pushing us to make an ever-improving and better product.\u201d<\/p>\n
And don’t expect the unflattering reviews of the R1 to stop the attempts to infuse AI into hardware.<\/p>\n
\u201cI expect to see many more devices in this genre over the next 18 months,\u201d says smartphone industry watcher Ben Wood, from CCS Insight.<\/p>\n
\u201cStill, my bet is that the smartphone will transcend all these quirky products for the foreseeable future \u2013 but featuring many of the AI-powered innovations promised on stand-alone devices.\u201d<\/p>\n
That prediction feels like a good one to me.<\/p>\n
My phone does all the stuff R1 can do, and so much more, plus it does it quickly and intuitively. <\/p>\n
If anything, this “smartphone killer” has made me appreciate the device it is trying to take on even more.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
