I’m prepared to make enemies to grow the economy, Starmer says in BBC interview<\/p>\n

As you saw for yourself, Sir Keir Starmer is frustrated by the \nconstant reminders of what he said five years ago.<\/p>\n
He says that over that time \nhe\u2019s listened to what voters were telling his party after its worst defeat in \ndecades. He has decided to put country before party. He has, in other words, \nchanged his mind, not just what he\u2019s saying.<\/p>\n
The toughest questions he now faces are those posed by \nindependent and respected economists who praise his desire for growth and \nwillingness, as he tells me, to \u201cmake enemies\u201d along the way. But they warn progress could be slow. <\/p>\n
It is \nthe boss of the Institute of Fiscal Studies which has warned of the need to cut \n\u00a318bn from public spending, describing Labour\u2019s promises on schools and \nhospitals as \u201ctiny\u201d, if not trivial. <\/p>\n
Labour’s pledge to hire 6,500 new teachers is the equivalent to one new \nteacher for every three schools. The promise of two million extra NHS \nappointments a year represents an increase in NHS spending of less than 1%. This is small fiscal change. Starmer insists it’s just a first step. <\/p>\n
Sir Keir wishes more time was spent explaining and \nanalysing what he is now saying and less on what he once said. <\/p>\n
My experience \nreporting politics for the last few decades is that prime ministers are shaped \nby what they don\u2019t know lies ahead \u2013 a war, a pandemic, a banking crisis or \nstrikes \u2013 so what matters as much as what is in an election sales brochure is \nwhat the instincts and values are of the person at the top.<\/p>\n
