Sir Keir has previously said he will seek a better deal on trade with the EU than the one negotiated by Boris Johnson in late 2020.<\/p>\n
His Labour government wants to strike deals with the EU to reduce border checks on food products, lessen paperwork for touring artists, and boost recognition of work qualifications, making it easier for some professionals to work abroad.<\/p>\n
It also wants to broker a security pact with the EU, as well as a new returns agreement for failed asylum seekers.<\/p>\n
However, it remains unclear whether Brussels would entertain major changes to the UK’s existing Brexit trade deal, which is due to be reviewed in 2026.<\/p>\n
Taking questions from journalists after the news conference, Sir Keir was pressed over what concessions the UK would have to offer to secure a better deal. <\/p>\n
The PM said he was “absolutely clear” the government wanted to reset relations with Europe. <\/p>\n
He added: “That does not mean reversing Brexit or re-entering the single market or the customs union.<\/p>\n
“But it does mean a closer relationship on a number of fronts, including the economy, including defence, including exchanges.”<\/p>\n
The single market enables goods, service and people to move freely between member states, with countries applying many common rules and standards. <\/p>\n
The customs union is an agreement not to charge taxes called tariffs on goods coming from other EU countries, and to charge the same tariffs as each other on goods coming from outside the EU. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
