{"id":3614,"date":"2025-06-22T08:34:49","date_gmt":"2025-06-22T08:34:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/260web.com\/news\/starmer-calls-for-iran-to-return-to-negotiating-table\/"},"modified":"2025-06-22T08:34:49","modified_gmt":"2025-06-22T08:34:49","slug":"starmer-calls-for-iran-to-return-to-negotiating-table","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/260web.com\/news\/starmer-calls-for-iran-to-return-to-negotiating-table\/","title":{"rendered":"Starmer calls for Iran to return to negotiating table"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Starmer calls for Iran to return to negotiating table<\/p>\n<p><div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/260web.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/FnI4gR.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" readability=\"20\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Sir Keir Starmer has called on Iran to &#8220;return to the negotiating table&#8221; after the US bombed nuclear sites in the country overnight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">In a statement, the UK prime minister said stability in the region was a priority, describing Iran&#8217;s nuclear programme as &#8220;a grave threat to international security&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The BBC understands there was no UK involvement in the US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and that the prime minister was informed of them in advance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;Iran can never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon and the US has taken action to alleviate that threat,&#8221; Starmer added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" readability=\"35\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The US said it had carried out strikes on three nuclear facilities in Iran: Natanz, Isfahan and Fordo on Saturday night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">It followed the launch of a new Israeli operation against Iran on 12 June. Israel says its targets were military sites, including nuclear facilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Iran launched retaliatory strikes &#8211; with the two countries continuing to exchange fire since.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">President Donald Trump had initially refused to say whether the US would get involved, with the White House saying on Friday that a decision would be made &#8220;within the next two weeks&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">In a televised address following the strikes, the president said the operation was a &#8220;spectacular military<b id class=\"sc-d16436d-0 jpoiOL\"> <\/b>success&#8221;, adding that if Iran did not make peace quickly it would face &#8220;far greater&#8221; attacks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Iran&#8217;s foreign minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi called the US strikes &#8220;outrageous&#8221; and said they would have &#8220;everlasting consequences&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;Each and every member of the UN must be alarmed over this extremely dangerous, lawless and criminal behavior,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">UN Secretary General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres said the overnight strikes were a &#8220;dangerous escalation&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Published at Sun, 22 Jun 2025 07:44:02 +0000<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Starmer calls for Iran to return to negotiating table Sir Keir Starmer has called on Iran to &#8220;return to the negotiating table&#8221; after the US bombed nuclear sites in the country overnight.
