However, one industry group said setting pay was a complex process and regulating adverts was not always suitable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It comes a week after the UK&#8217;s equality watchdog said employees should legally be able to find out what their colleagues are earning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Burnham said the current system felt &#8220;weighted against the applicant&#8221; and the changes were aimed at &#8220;tilting the scales back&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;It can be quite soul destroying for young people these days, applying for jobs when the salary is not listed but sometimes they&#8217;re not getting a reply,&#8221; he told the BBC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The prime minister added that publishing salaries in adverts was also important for closing the gender pay gap.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He was also challenged over whether MPs should be disclosing salaries when advertising for staff in their offices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A number of politicians are currently advertising for roles without giving an expected salary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Burnham said: &#8220;It would apply completely to them too and the call I&#8217;m making today is, before the law changes do it voluntarily because it&#8217;s the right thing to do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"subheadline\" class=\"ssrcss-vxwoax-ComponentWrapper e1aon0op1\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-usmnse-Spacer e1aon0op0\">\n<div data-testid=\"subheadline\">\n<h2 id=\"Greater-transparency\" tabindex=\"-1\" class=\"ssrcss-1sc9t00-Heading e10rt3ze0\"><span role=\"text\">Greater transparency<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"text\" class=\"ssrcss-vxwoax-ComponentWrapper e1aon0op1\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-126h8e-Spacer e1aon0op0\">\n<div data-testid=\"rich-text\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-nqezkk-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Cabinet Office launched a consultation into pay and reducing discrimination in the summer, and the government said there had been &#8220;overwhelming support&#8221; for greater transparency, with 94% of respondents backing the move.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Whether you&#8217;re a young person starting out or a parent trying to support your family, you should know what a job pays before spending your time and effort applying for it,&#8221; Burnham said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The government said the move was part of attempts to reduce the nearly one million young people not in education, employment or training &#8211; or &#8220;Neet&#8221; &#8211; ahead of the final report of the Milburn Review into youth inactivity, which is due in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Publishing salary details upfront could &#8220;expose unjustified differences in pay, give workers greater confidence to challenge discrimination and prevent disagreements over pay escalating into disputes&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The proposals are similar to measures being introduced in the European Union.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Employers in Europe will have to disclose the initial pay or range for new roles, which must either be included in a published job advert or shared before an interview.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">According to data from UK jobs website Adzuna, 51% of the adverts on its site in September had salary information, but the proportion has been falling in recent years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Adzuna co-founder Andrew Hunter said being open about pay &#8220;should be the norm, not the exception&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He added that employers who put a salary on a job advert &#8220;attract more applicants, and better-suited ones&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"subheadline\" class=\"ssrcss-vxwoax-ComponentWrapper e1aon0op1\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-usmnse-Spacer e1aon0op0\">\n<div data-testid=\"subheadline\">\n<h2 id=\"More-complicated\" tabindex=\"-1\" class=\"ssrcss-1sc9t00-Heading e10rt3ze0\"><span role=\"text\">&#8216;More complicated&#8217;<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"text\" class=\"ssrcss-vxwoax-ComponentWrapper e1aon0op1\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-126h8e-Spacer e1aon0op0\">\n<div data-testid=\"rich-text\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-nqezkk-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Previous research from the CIPD, an industry body for human resources managers, has indicated that the public sector and charities are more likely to reveal pay information that private firms, while pay ranges were more common than specific salaries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But it found not all employers were &#8220;fully transparent&#8221;, with pay ranges sometimes wider than \u00a310,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">CIPD chief executive Neil Carberry said that while, in principle, giving salary details was &#8220;a good thing&#8221;, in practice it was &#8220;more complicated&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;There isn&#8217;t always a single fixed figure, and employers will want to set pay based on a candidate&#8217;s skills, experience and potential.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Carberry added the process was complex, saying that drafting job adverts is &#8220;best left to good employer practice rather than government regulation&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The government has said it will set out further details on what information will be required and how the legislation will be enforced &#8220;in due course&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Conservative shadow business secretary Julia Lopez said: &#8220;At a time when employers are finding it harder and harder to take on staff, Labour have decided to make their lives even more difficult.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;It should be up to businesses to decide what information they advertise about job openings, and to decide how to attract the best applicants. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;As long as they are not being dishonest, misleading or discriminatory, it should not be a matter for the government.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Last week, the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), said publishing salaries in job adverts would be a &#8220;positive step&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It also said bosses should be required to respond to questionnaires about colleagues&#8217;
